Lochlan, Son of Machinist Member Jason Murray, Makes A Difference For The Poor And Homeless

For the third year, Lochlan has led the “Hungry Tummies” food drive, helping out the poor and homeless in Langley. The first year netted 140 kilos of food. In 2013 that haul increased to 230 kilos.

This December 2014 saw Lochlan collecting 280 kilos of food plus a donation of $750 from LL692 and LL11 to buy more food.

This year, Lochlan upped the ante, hoping to collect 600 pounds by day’s end.
The Langley Advance carried a feature on the Food Drive quoting Lochlan “A few years ago I just got to feeling that I should help people who don’t have much money and need food. The first time, we just got a bunch of food from our house and brought it to a food place, and from then on we were collecting food from people.”

food-driveThe paper continued that Lochlan’s dad Jason, who works for Belterra, said he’s “super proud” of his son, who came up with this plan when he was four years old and hosted his first event when he was five. “Just the fact that he’s thinking of other people beyond himself is pretty awesome,” Jason said. “He came up with the idea and we just got behind him.”

District Lodge 250 salutes this young man for thinking of his community and finding a material way to help.

Our Members undertake everything from precision machining, gear cutting and major fabrication to field repairs. The Company has a large variety of equipment including bevel gear cutters, CNC machining centres, 5 axis CNC turning centres, large boring mills and a custom built heat treating machine.

Wages will increase by 3%, 2.5% and 2% over the next three years plus an additional $108 will deposited into every Members Retirement Saving every month and up to $140 will be added to pay cheques each month as a bonus. Considering the low inflation climate of the economy, these are significant increases.

An increase of overtime meal allowances to $20, a subsidy of custom ear plugs and clarification of the conditions of employment for Part Time employment of retired Members round out this agreement.

Given the solid increases in compensation contained within the new Collective Agreement, it is no surprise the deal was accepted by an 83% margin.

  • 4 year agreement – 2%, 2%, 2.5%, 2.5%
  • New Harassment language
  • Voluntary Overtime for Senior Employees
  • The deletion of the Tuesday to Saturday shift
  • Option to Join Machinists Union Pension Plan
  • Benefits Improvements:
    • STD. from $501.00 to a max of $750.00 (60% of regular earnings)
    • LTD. from $3500.00 per month to a max of $10,000 per month (65% of regular earnings)
    • Direct Pay Drug Card plus % paid was increased to 85% from 80%
    • Orthopedic shoes increased to 1-pair from a max $150.00 reimbursement.
    • New vision care for the entire family – $150.00 per family member plus eye exams at $75.00

Workers at Duncan Ironworks Vote 100% for a New Three Year Agreement

scottSometimes bargaining goes sideways and sometimes it goes well. The new three year Agreement at Duncan Iron Works (DIW) falls into the latter category due to the Solidarity of this long time Union shop and the recognition of our Members skills by the Employer.greg

After a few productive bargaining sessions, a Memorandum of Agreement was signed and at the Contract Ratification meeting the new terms were accepted unanimously.

DIW1DIW has been prospering over the last three years and management decided to share some of the gains with the workforce. An on-going relationship with BC Hydro, combined with successful bidding on fabrication jobs has kept the shop on solid footing. The machine shop has been less busy but has found work for the four in the department.danny

Family Day is included in the new agreement and combined with a 2% first year increase gives a solid 2.4% increase in the first year. The following two years attract a 2.5% increase. Improvements in the Health and Welfare provisions add more value. The Dental plan will now cover 100% of minor and major work to a per person maximum of $2,000 per annum, increasing to $2,500 in 2015. Boot allowance now stands at $225.ryan

The Company agreed to pay a Lead Hand (4% premium) on any shift or a Charge Hand (7% premium) for shifts more than four people.

Both the Company and Union are pleased with the way this round of bargaining went and look forward to more good years.mike

Labour Shows Its Style At Nanaimo, Duncan and District Labour Council Picnic at Transfer Beach, Ladysmith

The annual Labour Day Picnic was held by the Nanaimo, Duncan and District Labour Council on September 3, 2013. New Democrat MLAs Lenard Krog, Bill Routley and Doug Routley and MP Jean Crowder attended, each making a few short remarks saluting the Unions gathered.

John_KiethFor the first time, the Machinists Union had a table display. Chief Shop Steward John Humphrey from Inland Kenworth (LL1857), arranged for the table to be manned. Featured was information about the IAM and our newsletter, Northwest News. Shirts were given away in a draw and the usual swag, including our excellent pencils c/w clips.

The table was not the only contribution made by Machinists. Two members of unioNation™ came to share some of the original songs written by Machinists. Brother Brad Seefried brought two other members of his band Mine Town to perform his songs ‘Little Penguins’ and ‘I AM a Workingman’. BR Alastair Haythornthwaite performed ‘Sleeping Giant’ and a new song about the founders of our Union ‘Ride, Boomers, Ride’. Their efforts were well received.
