Day of Mourning Memorial Held In Victoria

The Day of Mourning commemorates workers killed, injuried of suffering illness as a result of their employment. The Canadian Labour Congress started the Day of Mourning on April 28, 1984. The Federal government officially proclaimed the day starting in 1991. Today 27 countries mark this day. There are now over 45 permanent workers’ memorials in BC.

Last year in British Columbia, 143 workers died and a staggering 95,600 were injured. In the British Columbia Provincial Capital, Victoria, the public ceremony heard remarks from:

  • Mayor Dean Fortin
  • Diana Miles of WorkSafeBC
  • Stan Dzbik, president of LL456 and treasurer of the Victoria Labour Council
  • Gord Tuck who lost his leg to a logging accident and went on to be a Para-Olympic skiing champion
  • Linda Dorsett whose husband was killed while commercial fishing off Hiada Gwaii
  • MLA Iain Black

In the crowd were many delegates from the Victoria Labour Council and MLAs Adrian Dix and Rob Fleming.
