{"id":483,"date":"2023-12-27T09:58:18","date_gmt":"2023-12-27T17:58:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/iamdistrict250.ca\/?p=483"},"modified":"2023-12-27T09:58:19","modified_gmt":"2023-12-27T17:58:19","slug":"iam-local-1562-members-ratify-contract-end-strike-at-howmet-aerospace-in-kingston-ny","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/iamdistrict250.ca\/?p=483","title":{"rendered":"IAM Local 1562 Members Ratify Contract; End Strike at Howmet Aerospace in Kingston, NY"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class='booster-block booster-read-block'><\/div>\n<p><strong>KINGSTON, N.Y.,&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>Dec. 1<\/strong><strong>5, 2023<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013\u2013 Members of the International Association of Machinist and Aerospace Workers (IAM) Local 1562 at Howmet Aerospace who have been on strike since Nov. 1, 2023, at the Kingston Business Park voted to ratify a new contract on Wed., Dec 13.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The strike involved approximately 70 IAM&nbsp;members&nbsp;consisting of assemblers, machinists, inspectors, and others who produce components for the defense and aerospace industries.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>IAM Local 1562 members went on strike to highlight the wage disparity compared to workers in similar roles nationwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The workers who were on strike for 43 days, returned to work on Thurs., Dec. 14. The new contract, which received a majority vote in favor, will provide a 13.5 percent wage increase over three years and implement changes to how overtime is calculated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis agreement represents a fair compromise that addresses the concerns of our hardworking members,\u201d said IAM Eastern Territory General Vice President David Sullivan. \u201cWe appreciate the dedication and solidarity demonstrated by IAM Local 1562 throughout this challenging negotiation process.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Highlights of the Agreement:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The agreement includes a 13.5% wage increase over three years.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>5% cap on medical<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Howmet Aerospace withdrew any proposed changes to overtime compensation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Increases to the pension were included in the total package negotiated prior to the strike.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An additional sick day will be granted in year 2 of the agreement.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Employees gain the ability to use vacation to cover sick leave with a doctor\u2019s note.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI am proud of the dedication shown by the negotiating committee,\u201d said IAM District 15 Business Representative Kevin Weidman. \u201cOur members stood strong, and we believe this offer is fair enough for us to go back to work. Our members worked tirelessly, especially through challenging times like the COVID-19 pandemic, and they deserve fair compensation.
